Cherry Blossom – mixed media painting

I’ll be honest…I never really know where I am going with any of my paintings. I’m not sure how many artists will admit that, but this is what I love about abstract painting…you don’t need to know, you don’t need a plan.

My base layers usually start with a vintage newspaper clipping, book pages or vintage fabric, as in this particular painting. From there, I add layers of paints and sand down each layer only to add more paint, paper/fabric. Once I think the painting is finished, I cover it up with more paint and use a power sander to reveal all of the layers. I’m often surprised with the results. Cherry Blossom is one of those ‘happy’ surprises.

Edge of Winter – Abstract Painting

I usually find it difficult to create artwork if any part of the painting is pre-determined. In this case, I painted this for my sister, as a Christmas gift. She has been asking me for years to create a painting for her, but I often struggled with putting onto the canvas, someone elses vision. I paint on a whim, allowing my emotions to guide me…so commissioned art, is not my forte.

Fortunately, with this painting, I only had the paint colors in mind…blue and grey. I think I can handle that…and so, I did.

Edge of Winter is one of my favorite paintings and my sister agrees. She loves it so much that she has commissioned me for a larger painting, but this time, she added some ideas of her own. I’m interested to see where the next one goes, as I step outside of my comfort zone to create a painting mostly driven by another’s vision…

Love Letters – mixed media abstract collage art

Title:  Love Letters

I’m beginning to think that red is my color of choice!  No doubt, my past few paintings have been heavily focused on red. This smaller piece (16″ x 20″) was created using vintage papers and acrylics on gallery canvas.  Available for purchase on Etsy.

Trapped in Time – Original mixed-media abstract painting

I love how when you’re creating abstract art your current mood and emotions flow effortlessly onto the canvas.  This piece was created by layering acrylics, vintage papers and inks.  Visually this abstract may seem chaotic but for me it’s about emotions and letting go.  The original painting and digital download is available for purchase at my Etsy Shop .
