I usually find it difficult to create artwork if any part of the painting is pre-determined. In this case, I painted this for my sister, as a Christmas gift. She has been asking me for years to create a painting for her, but I often struggled with putting onto the canvas, someone elses vision. I paint on a whim, allowing my emotions to guide me…so commissioned art, is not my forte.
Fortunately, with this painting, I only had the paint colors in mind…blue and grey. I think I can handle that…and so, I did.
Edge of Winter is one of my favorite paintings and my sister agrees. She loves it so much that she has commissioned me for a larger painting, but this time, she added some ideas of her own. I’m interested to see where the next one goes, as I step outside of my comfort zone to create a painting mostly driven by another’s vision…
With the end of summer drawing to a close, I was inspired to use a muted, more neutral palette for this piece. September Flowers was inspired by vintage floral fabric swatches that I have collected over the years. Layers of the fabric gave this piece the texture I was going for before applying acrylic paints. If you look closely, you can subtly see the floral patterns beneath the surface paint.

If you know me, you know that I have a love for Egypt. I have a love for ancient history and Egypt is, by far, the epitome of all things ancient. As with most of my paintings, they begin with a base, layers and layers of vintage papers. These papers not only add massive texture to the piece, but implant ‘history’, to an otherwise new work of art.
I am a frequent shopper of antique stores and on one of my outings, I came across a massive, vintage book on Egypt. To most, this book would be an awesome display piece on their coffee table but to me…uh, I like to re-purpose things, so I ripped out some pages and embedded them into my new painting.

I’m beginning to think that red is my color of choice! No doubt, my past few paintings have been heavily focused on red. This smaller piece (16″ x 20″) was created using vintage papers and acrylics on gallery canvas. Available for purchase on Etsy.
